REGULATION OF ROBOTICS IN EUROPE: ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS - JULY 11, FIRST EDITION OF INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL FUNDED BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

A broad understanding of ethical, legal and economic implications of regulation of robotics, and the social concerns arising from development of emerging technologies will be explored during the first edition of the international summer school on "The regulation of robotics in Europe: legal, ethical and economic implications" to be held from July 11th to July 16th in Pisa, Sant’Anna School, as part of the Jean Monnet Project, funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus + program. The Opening Ceremony starts at 9.30 on Monday, July 11th and will bring together professors, researchers, experts, companies and business associations representatives, and members of Italian and European institutions.

Participants include: Mady Delvaux-Stehres, chair of the Committee of European Parliament on the regulation of robotics and artificial intelligence; Mihalis Kritikos, policy analyst in EU risk regulation; Maria Chiara Carrozza, member of the European Parliament and professor of Biorobotics at Sant’Anna School; Arturo Baroncelli, business development manager - Comau S.p.A.; Renzo Valleggi, CEO of Scienzia Machinale spinoff company; Fabio Bonsignorio, professor of Biorobotics at Sant’Anna School; Nadine Bender of Kuka Gmbh industrial robotics. The Opening Ceremony is chaired by Andrea Bertolini, assistant professor of private law and coordinator of the summer school.

Keynote speakers will focus on robots and liability issues, the safety standards for industrial robots, robot-testing in human environments, the creation of a European Agency for robotics and ethical issues related to robotics policy.

European experts on regulation of robotics together with professors of Sant’Anna School Institutes of Biorobotics, Dirpolis (Law, Politics and Development), and Management, will give lectures to young professionals working for policy makers or industries investing in or developing robotic products. Lectures aim to provide students with a broad perspective of ethical, legal and economic implications of regulation of robotics thanks to the interdisciplinary faculty group which include engineers, philosophers, legal experts and economists.

Many professors of Sant’Anna School were involved in EU project “RoboLaw”, coordinated by Erica Palmerini, professor of private law. The RoboLaw project focused on the development of technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence, with particular attention to ethical and legal issues. The guidelines on the regulation of robotics for the European Parliament and  the European Commission, which Andrea Bertolini recently presented before the JURI European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs, as a result of  "RoboLaw" project .

The summer school is aimed at undergraduate, masters or doctoral students, with social sciences background (lawyers, economists, philosophers and political scientists) or with engineering backgrounds. Lectures will offer opportunity for enhancing the skills required for consultants working in robot manufacturers technology companies or to undertake research activity in university in the field of legal or technical sciences.
